Why genetic testing matters
DNA testing helps inform thoughtful breeding decisions. Explore the labeled reports with each dog above, including the parent and grandparent reports linked on our original page.
Understanding a tested recessive variant
Clear means no copies of that variant; carrier means one copy; affected means two copies. These examples describe inheritance of that specific variant.
- Clear + clear
- 100% clear. We breed for clear whenever possible.
- Clear + carrier
- 50% clear, 50% carrier; no affected puppies for that variant.
- Carrier + carrier
- 25% clear, 50% carrier, 25% affected. This pairing is avoided.
- Carrier + affected
- 50% carrier, 50% affected. This pairing is never used.
